Parliament has, for the third time, thwarted the attempt by Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond to introduce the Import Restrictions Bill, marking the third such occurrence.

The proposed legislation, known as the Export and Import (Restrictions on Importation of Selected Strategic Product) Regulations, 2023, seeks to limit the importation of 22 strategic goods into Ghana.

Despite Mr Hammond's efforts, the Minority strongly opposed the move, citing concerns raised by various business groups and emphasising potential adverse effects on the country's businesses.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin deferred the laying of the bill to November 30, 2023, urging the Minister to address concerns raised by the Minority before proceeding.

This delay is seen as an attempt to ensure thorough scrutiny and consideration of the proposed legislation.
