Road tolls coming back in 2025

The government has decided to reintroduce road and bridge tolls in 2025.

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam made this announcement on Tuesday, July 23, during the presentation of the mid-year fiscal policy review for 2024 in Parliament.

On November 18, 2021, former Minister for Roads and Highways Kwasi Amoako-Atta directed the cessation of toll collection at various toll booths across the country.

This decision followed the announcement by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta during the 2022 budget presentation that road tolls had been abolished.

However, the government has now reversed this decision and has authorised the development of a framework to reintroduce road and bridge tolls in 2025.

“Mr. Speaker, Cabinet has also granted approval for the disbursement of an additional 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to settle outstanding claims relating to financial management companies and the establishment of a framework for the re-introduction of Road and Bridge Tolls in 2025,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.

He also mentioned that the government has approved the operationalization of the integrated property tax system and the amendment of the Fiscal Responsibility Act to reinstate the numeric threshold that was suspended in 2020.
