The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwesi Afreh Biney, has called for deeper collaboration among employers, employees, and SSNIT to safeguard the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s national pension scheme.

Speaking at a stakeholder forum, Mr. Biney emphasised that employers play a pivotal role in the trust's operations, and building strong partnerships across the board is crucial to ensuring the continued delivery of income security for Ghanaian workers.

“SSNIT’s mission is to provide confidence and financial security in old age.

The system only works when there is trust and cooperation between all parties involved,” Mr. Biney stated.

Currently, SSNIT pays monthly pensions to over 257,000 beneficiaries, a feat largely made possible through the timely and consistent contributions of employers across the country.

However, concerns persist regarding the adequacy of SSNIT pension payments, with some retirees voicing dissatisfaction over what they consider to be insufficient support, especially in the face of rising living costs.

Also addressing the forum, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA), Alex Frimpong, echoed the Director-General’s remarks, stressing the need for enhanced collaboration and transparency in managing the scheme.

“Employers are committed to playing their part, but it is essential that SSNIT engages openly with both employers and employees to build trust and confidence in the system,” Mr Frimpong noted.
