Dennis Boateng: Ghana Comedy Awards CEO applauds Ghanaian talents for beating off foreign competition

Being “fair,” Ghanaian comedians deserve praise because “they’ve been amazing,” according to Dennis Boateng.

The CEO of the Ghana Comedy Awards spoke to Prince Benjamin (PB) on Class 91.3 FM’s morning show.

He remembered a time when “we’d always wait for Nigerians to entertain us” and the popular opinion was “a funny comedian is South African,” and how the story is currently different, deservedly favouring Ghanaian talents.

Local comic acts are “doing amazing,” evidenced, for instance, by how “they are flooding the skits space online [for example] on TikTok.

“For stand-up comedy, come on, they are doing their own shows, they are filling auditoriums, filling national theatres, why wait? It’s important, we need to celebrate them. They’ve been doing this for us.”

Dennis Boateng argued the days of the COVID-19 pandemic would have been more terrifying “if we didn’t have these skits” by local comic acts.

Defending citizens against depression, comedians made people laugh hysterically through innovative online performances, Boateng highlighted.

“We need to support them,” he stressed.

There was once a time when event organisers spent hefty amounts, apparently prioritising foreign comic acts over their local mates. The public notion at the time was Ghanaian comedians are not funny.

In those days, Nigerians especially made a name in Ghana. Comic superstar Basketmouth has openly testified about this.

On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, Bright Okpocha, better known as Basketmouth, spoke on Accra-based Hitz FM's Andy Dosty-hosted morning programme, Daybreak Hitz.

“I owe you guys [Ghana] a certain level of my growth," the award-winning comic and TV star said. "The first big show that sold me to the world, I did it in Ghana."

It was during this event, he explained, that he showcased the acclaimed ‘Two Things Involved’ joke.

"That performance was what sold me,” Basketmouth admitted.
