‘Friday Night’: Lasmid on how Lil Win inspired, collaborated with him to leak his breakthrough, viral hit

Lasmid has revealed his catchy melodies are often inspired by the beats he works with.

He cited his viral hit Friday Night as an example.

“I cannot say the beat inspired the entire song but the beat contributed,” he said, footnoting: “When I listen to beats, I typically get melodies. I also create a lot of different melodies.”

The rapper-turned-singer was speaking with Sammy Brown on the Akwaaba Show on Accra 100.5 FM.

He sang the melody for the line “Phone don’t stop ringing… All my friends be calling…” and said that “simply” came to him while he listened to the beat.

“That very moment, I stop playing the beat and put it into the recording software,” he noted.

He said Friday Night’s melodies and lyrics came to him in different phases and at different stages of creation.

According to Lasmid, even though the public feverishly accepted the song, “everyone was rejecting it till we leaked it”.

“Anyone we played it to prior to the public hearing it was not getting the feeling I was getting from the song,” he explained, indicating the song was, thus, shelved.

However, he noted, everything changed when he met and “played all my songs to Kwadwo ‘Lil Win’ Nkansah”.

“When he heard what we had planned to release, he asked me to replay what came before that. The moment he heard the repeat, he exclaimed, ‘Let’s shoot a video right now and post it’. The moment he posted it, [it caught fire],” the Takoradi-born award-winning singer narrated.

Lasmid noted there were songs he makes that “contain all my feelings,” pointing to Friday Night and his recent hit Puul as examples.

He indicated there was another unreleased song that could be described in this same way.

Friday Night of June 2022 was the song that brought Lasmid to mainstream prominence.
