Serwaa Amihere explains why she proudly identifies as a ‘Daddy Lumba girl’
Popular broadcast journalist Serwaa Amihere has revealed how she became friends with iconic Highlife singer Daddy Lumba.
She spoke to Nana Romeo on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo.
“While growing up, my parents listened to Daddy Lumba a lot, especially my father, and I spent a lot of time with my father. So I heard a lot of the Daddy Lumba songs,” she began.
“But growing up, I also realised I enjoyed that kind of music more than the [modern sounds] Trap kinda music, the rap songs – those are not my style but [I like] the Highlife. I don’t just listen to Daddy Lumba, [however]. I listen to Dada KD, Kojo Antwi, AB Crenstil. I listen to all of them. That’s my [favourite] genre of music.”
Serwaa came to why she thinks Daddy Lumba towers above many Highlife greats.
“I just found that Daddy Lumba has a song for everything. Kojo Antwi does a lot of love songs. But Daddy Lumba has music for rivalry, a broken heart, funerals – he has everything you can think of. I listen to Amakye Dede, too, but he also does a lot of funeral and love songs only. Daddy Lumba has everything,” she explained.
The GHOne TV star added she simply had an inexplicable “love for Daddy Lumba”.
She revealed how they became friends, noting it was common knowledge in her circles she loved Daddy Lumba and “so one day, someone surprised me with a phone call to Daddy Lumba”.
“When I spoke to him, he told me he watches me every morning. Imagine how that made me feel. That the one I admire also admires me. Then we met and…” she narrated.
“I went to his house. He was so happy to see me and was equally so happy to see him. We were just happy to see each other because after the phone call, we spoke for a very long time before we eventually met. I went to see him on his birthday, after speaking for about six or eight months, and so we had the connection already. And you know his wife is called Serwaa – he loves people called Serwaa. And he knows I love his music and I keep talking about him,” Ms Amihere finished contentedly.
