CCAL proposes Atewa centenary and green festival to Okyenhene
The Concerned Citizens of Atewa Landscape (CCAL), a civic group committed to safeguarding the Atewa Forest Reserve, has submitted a proposal to the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, calling for a joint celebration marking the forest’s 100th anniversary and a Green Atewa Forest Festival.
The proposal seeks to commemorate the forest’s centenary as a protected reserve while rallying national support for its continued preservation.
It was presented at a forum where CCAL Convenor, Mr. Paul Asimeku, highlighted Atewa’s historic and ecological importance, adding that the group remains resolute in its mission despite the loss of a former coordinator.
Mr. Asimeku reminded traditional leaders that the Atewa Forest Reserve was first gazetted on January 5, 1926, by the Okyeman State Council under the leadership of Nana Ofori Atta I.
He described the forest as a “living heritage” of both Okyeman and Ghana, stressing the need to honour the foresight of the ancestors who protected it.
Proposed Celebration
CCAL is proposing a dual programme:
Official Launch of the Atewa Centenary Celebration and Green Atewa Forest Festival on January 5, 2026, in Kyebi, the historic capital of Akyem Abuakwa.
The Okyenhene, a globally recognised environmental advocate, is said to have endorsed the initiative.
The group also acknowledged that the event will be guided by the Okyeman Environment Foundation, headed by Nana Abodeɛsahene.
In support of the proposal, Mr. Richmond Quainor, CEO of the Wellness Wings Global Initiative NGO, pledged his organisation’s commitment to the cause, emphasising the need to protect the forest for present and future generations.
