Dumanafo Queen Mother advocates patronage of local foods to promote health and culture
The Queen Mother of Dumanafo in the Kwabre East Municipality, Nana Yaa Konadu Agyeman, has called on Ghanaians to increase the consumption and patronage of local foods as a way of preserving cultural heritage, improving health, and supporting local economies.
According to Nana Yaa Konadu Agyeman, indigenous Ghanaian meals offer significant nutritional benefits and played a key role in strengthening the immunity of older generations against diseases.
She observed that in the past, people largely depended on local delicacies made from natural ingredients, which contributed to their longevity and general well-being.
However, she expressed concern that the current generation has become increasingly attracted to exotic and fast foods, many of which are high in oil, salt, and artificial additives.
“These foreign and fast foods have shortened the lifespan of people in our time,” she said, warning that excessive consumption of such meals poses serious health risks.
The Queen Mother made the call at a traditional food cooking competition held at Dumanafo, which brought together community members to showcase a variety of indigenous dishes.
About 15 groups participated in the competition, preparing a range of traditional meals.
The event was also spiced up with indoor games and a football gala to engage and entertain the youth.
Some participants, speaking to CTV/Accra FM News, highlighted the importance of consuming traditional meals, noting that local foods are healthier, more affordable, and help preserve Ghana’s cultural identity.
The event formed part of efforts to revive interest in indigenous cuisines and encourage younger generations to embrace local food traditions.
