Uncertainty continues to surround the funeral and burial of the late Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo Kantanka following a legal challenge by the Head of the Safo Family, conflicting directives over the burial date, and insistence by former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo that the funeral will proceed as scheduled.

On Monday, Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena Kantanka, Head of the Safo Family and leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, announced that he had instructed his lawyers to commence legal proceedings over what he described as a breach of the late Apostle's will. He said the move followed unsuccessful attempts to resolve disagreements within the family over the implementation of the will and the burial arrangements.

According to Akofena, the legal action seeks to ensure that the late apostle's burial and final funeral rites are conducted in accordance with his last will and testament.

At a separate press conference, Akofena also dismissed reports that Apostle Kwadwo Safo would be buried on July 30, urging members of Kristo Asafo Mission and the public to ignore any such announcements.

"I urge the members of Kristo Asafo Mission to disregard any date and information circulating."

He maintained that no official burial date had been announced by the family.

"I stand on my authority as the Kankanta family head and the leader of Kristo Asafo to say throw away any date you have heard about. There's no truth in it," he said, adding: "There'll be no burial held on the 30th of July 2026."

However, Sarah Adwoa Safo has rejected those claims, insisting that the funeral committee had already concluded arrangements after consultations with key stakeholders, including the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Speaking on Angel FM, she alleged that her brother Akofena failed to proceed with an earlier funeral date scheduled for June 25, leading to the current arrangements for the funeral to be held in the last week of July.

She outlined the programme for the final funeral rites.

"On the 30th of July, we will go to Gomoa Mpota to bury my late father. On the 31st of July, we will be at Independence Square to hold the funeral service. Then, on the 8th of August, we will travel to Asante Mampong in Kumasi for the thanksgiving service," she said. 

"So everyone should disregard the rumours that the funeral will not take place or that it has been cancelled," she emphasised.

Adwoa Safo also disclosed that she had undergone successful surgery after sustaining gunshot injuries during the coronation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I. 

The conflicting positions have left the burial arrangements for the late founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission in doubt, with the matter now headed for the courts even as a section of the family insists the funeral will proceed on the previously announced dates.
