The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has launched a comprehensive disaster prevention initiative aimed at reducing environmental risks and protecting lives and property across the district.

Speaking at the First Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly on Tuesday, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Abubakar Sedik, unveiled a multi-pronged strategy developed in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

A key component of the initiative is a proactive hazard-mapping exercise targeting communities identified as being most vulnerable to flooding.

Mr Sedik also announced climate change interventions aimed at safeguarding agriculture and livelihoods from increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather conditions.

To promote community participation in disaster prevention efforts, the Assembly and NADMO are intensifying public education campaigns across the district.

The community-based engagements will focus on practical safety measures, structural resilience and the identification of early warning signs of potential disasters.

The DCE further disclosed that the assembly is procuring emergency relief items to ensure that affected families can receive food, shelter and medical assistance promptly in the event of a disaster.

Mr Sedik stressed that strengthening the district's resilience to disasters requires the collective effort of all stakeholders and called on community leaders, residents and other stakeholders to cooperate fully with NADMO officials.

He also urged members of the District Assembly to set aside partisan and personal interests and work together towards the development of the district.

Mr Sedik expressed satisfaction with the district's progress, noting that the achievements recorded so far were the result of collective effort and should not be attributed to any one individual.
