GRIDCo, ECG temporarily shut down Mallam and Achimota substations over flood risk
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have temporarily suspended electricity supply from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations after severe flooding affected critical power infrastructure in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, the two utilities said the decision was taken as a precaution to ensure public safety, protect vital equipment and minimise damage to the national electricity network.
According to GRIDCo and ECG, rising floodwaters have impacted a number of substations, creating unsafe conditions for both personnel and electrical installations.
The utilities explained that electricity supply from the affected substations will remain off until engineers determine that conditions are safe for restoration.
Technical teams have since been deployed to assess the extent of the damage and closely monitor the situation to facilitate the safe restoration of power.
GRIDCo and ECG also cautioned that electricity supply could be temporarily interrupted in other flood-affected communities if similar safety concerns arise.
They advised the public to remain vigilant and immediately report electricity-related hazards, including fallen poles, exposed or damaged power lines and flooded electrical installations, to the nearest ECG office or through the company's customer service channels.
The utilities said timely reporting would enable emergency teams to respond quickly and reduce the risk of accidents.
GRIDCo and ECG apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the outages and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore power as soon as floodwaters recede and it is safe to resume operations.
