C/R: Dispute over GHS 300 ends in tragedy in Mankessim
A seemingly small debt of 300 Ghana cedis (GHC 300) has tragically resulted in the death of a man in the New Nkusukum area of the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.
The victim, identified as Agyeiku, reportedly lost his life following a violent altercation with his friend and colleague, Kwame Pluto.
According to eyewitnesses and local reports, the incident occurred after the two friends, who worked together as “hustlers” — a form of informal labour — returned home from a day’s work.
As they prepared to divide their earnings, late Agyeiku requested his share from Kwame Pluto.
A dispute arose when Kwame Pluto allegedly refused to hand over the money.
The disagreement quickly escalated into violence.
Agyeiku reportedly tried to hold onto Kwame Pluto to secure his payment, prompting Kwame Pluto to allegedly produce a sharp object, described as a “size,” and repeatedly stabbed Agyeiku.
The brutal assault left Agyeiku severely injured, and he later fainted.
He was rushed to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Mankessim around 8 PM, but succumbed to his injuries despite medical intervention.
Alhaji Ali Abubakar Soring, the Assembly Member for New Nkusukum, confirmed the incident, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life.
He noted that the suspect, Kwame Pluto, has been remanded in police custody at Cape Coast Ankafu for two weeks as investigations continue.
Eyewitnesses and family members recounted that the altercation began after they returned from a funeral in Kumasi, ultimately spiralling into a fatal confrontation.
The community has expressed shock at the extreme violence over such a minor sum, emphasising the urgent need for peaceful conflict resolution.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident and ensure justice for Agyeiku.
