Metro Mass Transit expands services, adds new routes to tackle Accra's transport scarcity
Metro Mass Transit (MMT) is ramping up operations in Accra ahead of the busy season, introducing additional buses and new routes to ease congestion and improve the commuter experience.
Mohamed Mubarak Watara, Head of Corporate Communications at MMT, said the expansion is part of a proactive effort to meet rising demand and follow directives from the Ministry of Transport.
The company has added several routes, including Accra–CMB to Kumasi, Kaneshi–Kassoa, Kaneshi–Amasaman, Circle–Amasaman, Circle–Nungua, 37 Opebia–Adenta, Shiashi–Adenta, Okponglo–Lapas, and Shiashi–Circle, among others.
Despite the expansion, MMT faces fleet limitations and traffic congestion, causing delays on some trips.
For instance, a bus departing Accra at 4:30 pm may not reach Kasoa until 7 pm.
MMT plans to introduce 29‑seater buses in the first week of March and aims to add 90 electric buses (EVs) pending government approval.
Under the proactive leadership of the Managing Director, workshop efficiency has improved significantly, with most breakdowns now fixed within 24 hours, reducing instances of stranded buses.
MMT reassured passengers that it is committed to increasing capacity and reliability, with the expanded fleet and improved maintenance culture expected to significantly ease intra-city travel in the near future.
