CAKROB Mining CEO urges gov't to support responsible miners

News
Mr. Charles Abgedefia

The Chief Executive Officer of CAKROB Mining Company, Mr. Charles Abgedefia, has appealed to the government to prioritise and support responsible mining firms rather than placing all emphasis on the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

Speaking during a media monitoring visit to mining sites in the Tano North Municipality, Mr. Abgedefia stressed that responsible mining companies play a critical role in promoting sustainable practices, yet are often unfairly lumped together with illegal operators.

“It is unfortunate that responsible miners are frequently classified as galamseyers.

Recently, the government directed a halt in all mining activities in Tano North, but our operations are legal and responsibly managed.

Such directives threaten our survival and undermine the benefits we provide to the community,” he said.

He explained that CAKROB Mining has invested in several Social Corporate Responsibility projects, including the construction of schools, boreholes, and toilet facilities.

However, these projects have stalled following the government’s directive to suspend mining activities in the area.

Mr. Abgedefia further urged the government to provide job security for licensed miners, arguing that this would set a positive example for illegal miners to adopt responsible practices.

Supporting his call, the youth leader of the community, Alhassan Shela Yaya, noted that the company has employed more than 150 young people in the area over the past two years.

He added that CAKROB Mining has also constructed mechanised boreholes and engaged women in tree planting initiatives.

He appealed to the government to encourage the growth of local mining companies, emphasising that such support would create jobs and deliver sustainable development in rural communities.
