Chairman Wontumi, 2 others file motion seeking deferral of judgment
Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and two other accused persons have filed an application at the High Court seeking a deferral of judgment in an ongoing criminal case.
According to a Notice of Motion filed at the Criminal Division of the High Court in Accra, the application was submitted on behalf of the first and third accused persons, Bernard Antwi Boasiako and Akonta Mining Company Limited.
The motion, brought under the inherent jurisdiction of the court, is seeking an order to defer the delivery of judgment for a reasonable period to enable newly appointed counsel for the applicants to obtain and review the certified record of proceedings and all processes filed in the case.
The application states that access to the court records would allow counsel to prepare and file what it describes as a credible and competent written submission on behalf of the applicants based on grounds outlined in an accompanying affidavit.
The Republic is listed as the respondent in the case, while Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited are named as accused persons and applicants.
The motion was filed by lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea on behalf of the first and third accused persons.
Court documents indicate that the application was filed on 23 June 2026 and is expected to be moved before the High Court on a date to be determined by the court.
The Registrar of the High Court, Criminal Division, and the Attorney-General's Chambers have been served with the application.
The High court in Accra is expected to rule on whether to grant the application or proceed with the scheduled judgement on July 3.
