President John Dramani Mahama has directed contractors undertaking the government's proposed 24-Hour Economy market projects across the country to complete the projects before receiving payment.

The president said the directive is intended to strengthen accountability and prevent delays in project execution, noting that some contractors had previously failed to complete projects after receiving advance payments.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy market in Assin Bereku in the Assin North District during his two-day working tour of the Central Region, President Mahama reaffirmed that the 24-Hour Economy remains one of his flagship campaign promises and assured Ghanaians of his commitment to fully implementing the policy.

He said the construction of modern markets under the initiative would create employment opportunities, support local businesses and stimulate economic growth.

The president stressed that contractors would be required to demonstrate progress and complete the assigned projects before the government releases funds.

He said the measure had become necessary because previous experience showed that some contractors diverted project funds for other purposes, resulting in abandoned or delayed projects.

President Mahama further stated that despite the economic challenges inherited by his administration, the government remains committed to implementing the 24-Hour Economy policy to drive national development and improve livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the Paramount Chief of the Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Ahunabobrim Nana Prah Agyensaim VI, commended President Mahama for introducing the 24-Hour Economy initiative.

The Paramount Chief acknowledged that although the policy may attract criticism from some sections of the public, he believes it has the potential to transform Ghana's economy and create sustainable employment opportunities.

He urged the president to remain focused and not be discouraged by critics, adding that the success of the policy depends on the collective support of all Ghanaians.

Drawing a comparison with the national support given to Ghana's Black Stars, the Paramount Chief called on citizens to rally behind the 24-Hour Economy initiative in the same spirit of unity for the benefit of the country.

He welcomed the policy and expressed confidence that it would make a significant contribution to Ghana's socio-economic development.
