Two young men are reportedly fighting for their lives following an alleged assault by police officers from Adawso in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The incident occurred at Nkyenenkyene after tensions flared between local youth and a herdsman.

According to Nana Kwabena Wiafe, Nifahene of Nkyenenkyene, the confrontation began when the herdsman allegedly drove his cattle onto farmlands in the community, destroying crops.

He explained that the activities of Fulani herdsmen have been a long-standing concern, prompting chiefs and community leaders to issue a directive prohibiting cattle from grazing on Nkyenenkyene lands.

The situation escalated when the herdsman allegedly disregarded the directive, leading to a confrontation with the youth.

During the clash, one of the cattle was reportedly shot dead.

Reports indicate that three police officers later arrived in the community and attempted to arrest some committee members.

The youth reportedly resisted the arrest.

Subsequently, about 14 fully armed police officers also later stormed the town.

Eyewitnesses allege that the officers assaulted several youth using gun butts, boots, and helmets, leaving one person unconscious.

The injured victims were first taken to the Nkyenenkyene Health Centre and later referred to the Nkwatia Polyclinic for further treatment.

Although they were treated and discharged, they have reportedly been advised to undergo CT scans and X-rays for further medical assessment.

Some of the victims recounted their ordeal and appealed to the leadership of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to investigate the matter, stating that alleged cases of police brutality against civilians are becoming too frequent.

Residents also expressed concern over the activities of Fulani herdsmen, saying the presence of cattle has negatively impacted farming, livelihoods, and the security of the community. They called on appropriate authorities to intervene and address the situation.
