Election Watch Ghana warns of vote buying ahead of NPP January 31 Polls
Election Watch Ghana has expressed serious concern over what it says is widespread inducement of voters ahead of the January 31 polls, cautioning that the credibility of the electoral process is facing a major test.
In a release dated Thursday, January 29, 2026, the civil society election observer revealed that information gathered from its outreach activities suggests some aspirants are allegedly spending vast amounts of money to influence the choices of delegates.
The group said it is disturbed by reports that financial muscle is being used to tilt the contest, warning that such practices risk eroding public confidence in the democratic system.
Election Watch Ghana disclosed that leading contenders are reportedly setting aside between GH¢150 million and GH¢200 million to curry favour with delegates. The alleged inducements include accommodation in hotels, transport arrangements, meals and cash allowances.
According to the organisation, these actions undermine the credibility of the process and threaten both party cohesion and national stability.
The group has therefore called on the Electoral Commission to move swiftly to investigate the claims and put measures in place to guarantee fairness in the election.
It also appealed to the public, party officials and other stakeholders to report any suspected cases of vote inducement, directing them to the Electoral Commission’s toll-free number, 0800 324 324.
Election Watch Ghana further urged the Commission to maintain strict neutrality, stressing that election officials must avoid any form of compromise, including the acceptance of gifts or favours from candidates.
The organisation concluded by urging all parties involved to prioritise the national interest, warning that the conduct of the election could have lasting implications for Ghana’s democracy.
