Energy Minister engages PSWU over proposed merger of Energy Commission and PURC
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has met with representatives of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to address concerns surrounding the proposed merger of the Energy Commission and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The engagement follows reservations expressed by some workers about the potential impact of the merger on jobs, operations and regulatory independence within the power sector.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Jinapor assured the union that the government would not proceed with any merger without broad consultation and consensus among key stakeholders.
He emphasised that while reforms within the energy sector are necessary to improve efficiency and strengthen regulatory oversight, such changes would not be imposed without dialogue, transparency and mutual understanding.
According to the Minister, organised labour groups, including the PSWU, will remain central to discussions as the government explores options for restructuring the regulatory framework.
He noted that consensus-building would guide the process to ensure that any decision taken serves the national interest while protecting the welfare of workers.
The proposed merger forms part of broader efforts to streamline operations and enhance performance within Ghana’s energy and utilities regulation space, he concluded.
