GA/R: 85% complete Nungua-Barrier interchange abandoned

The contractor working on the Nungua-Barrier interchange in the Greater Accra Region has abandoned the project even though the project is said to be 85 per cent complete.
Works have stalled from the Sakumono, Nungua Cold Store area to Teshie and tools and equipment have been moved from the site.
It is, however, not clear why works have stalled on the project for the last two months.
But Assemblyman for Bleketse West Electoral Area in the Krowor Municipal Assembly, Abdullai Sakra Zionite, confirmed works have stalled adding that no reason has been assigned for the stoppage.
He added that the energy with which the contractor started had died down and the number of workers kept dwindling until they finally vanished on the road.
He said the reason for the stoppage of work has not been mentioned but from his checks from the Assembly, there are no funds for the completion of the project.
The Assemblyman made this revelation on the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Odeyeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM.
He expressed worry about how the stoppage of work is affecting businesses in the area.
According to him, residents who ply their trade along the way had to close shop in anticipation that the project will be completed in time for them to return.
He said another problem is the emission of dust from the road.
He noted that his people are suffering from the constant inhalation of dust.
He was of the view the traffic situation has worsened because some of the roads have been blocked.
The Secretary of the Nungua Youth For Development (NYFD), Sir Thompson, for his part, warned that the group very soon will marshal the youth in the area to embark on a massive demonstration against the government if the project is not completed as scheduled.
"They promised us the project will be completed in February. Later, they said March and pushed it to April.
"So we're waiting for President Akufo-Addo to give us the interchange he promised us," he concluded
