GFD marks 2025 National Day for PWDs

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has commemorated the 2025 National Day for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with a renewed call for inclusive education and greater participation of persons with disabilities in national development.
Held under the theme “Advancing Inclusion Through Education,” the celebration emphasised the transformative power of education in empowering PWDs and breaking down societal barriers.
As part of the event, the GFD hosted an Honours Awards ceremony to recognise individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to promoting disability rights and inclusion in Ghana.
President of the GFD, Joseph Atsu Homadzi, highlighted persistent challenges faced by PWDs in accessing quality education. He called for increased investment in disability-friendly infrastructure, learning materials, and teacher training to ensure that all learners, regardless of ability, are given equal opportunities.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the government, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to disability inclusion, citing President John Mahama’s 2025 State of the Nation Address.
“This commitment includes tactical, legislative, and systemic changes to promote inclusivity across all levels of the education sector,” Dr. Apaak said.
He also announced that the government, in collaboration with the private sector, is taking steps to enforce a five per cent employment quota for Persons With Disabilities as part of broader efforts to enhance economic empowerment.
The event brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, development partners, and the disability community, all united in their call for inclusive policies and practices to ensure that no one is left behind in Ghana’s development agenda.
