GRDA introduces Ghana Railway master plan 2026 to drive national connectivity
The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has rolled out a new railway master plan designed to connect key cities nationwide and offer a dependable option for the movement of goods and passengers.
Unveiling the initiative, GRDA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Frederick Appoh said the strategy prioritises operational efficiency, improved investment outcomes, and increased participation from the private sector.
According to him, a central focus of the plan is to make railway infrastructure financially attractive by linking rail lines to major economic hubs, particularly in the mining sector.
“Investment viability depends on clear returns, and one of the strongest opportunities lies in integrating rail transport with mining activities,” Dr. Appoh explained.
Known as the Ghana Railway Master Plan 2026, the programme will be showcased through a nationwide roadshow aimed at engaging potential investors and industry stakeholders.
Dr. Appoh disclosed that the plan was developed in collaboration with GIADIC and GISDEC, and that further consultations are underway with agencies in trade, mining, and related sectors to finalise implementation details.
He noted that beyond improving rail services, the initiative seeks to unlock billions of dollars in private capital for railway development, positioning rail as a strategic and efficient alternative to road transport.
The GRDA boss also pointed to opportunities for large-scale haulage from Ghana’s mineral-rich areas, including manganese, bauxite, and iron ore, as well as planned rail links to cocoa-producing zones.
He added that while passenger rail services on their own may not yield strong financial returns, combining them with freight operations significantly improves the commercial viability of the railway network.
