Ghana, Germany sign bilateral debt agreement to advance economic recovery
The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has signed a bilateral debt agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the German Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Frederik Landshöft, marking a major milestone in Ghana’s ongoing debt restructuring programme.
The agreement, which is the sixth of its kind under Ghana’s bilateral debt restructuring process, forms part of efforts to restore fiscal stability and strengthen the foundation for sustainable economic growth.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Dr. Ato Forson described the agreement as “another critical milestone in our economic recovery journey,” noting that it underscores Ghana’s determination to consolidate progress and rebuild confidence in its economy.
“This agreement strengthens the foundations of fiscal stability and anchors our long-term progress as a nation determined to restore growth and resilience,” the Finance Minister stated.
Dr. Forson expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Germany for their continued partnership and support for Ghana’s economic reforms.
“I wish to thank the Government and people of Germany for their steadfast partnership and confidence in Ghana’s future. Together, we are building a stronger, more sustainable economy, one step at a time,” he added.
The bilateral debt restructuring forms a key component of Ghana’s International Monetary Fund (IMF)-supported programme, aimed at reducing the country’s debt burden and creating fiscal space for investments in growth and social protection.
Germany is one of Ghana’s major bilateral creditors and has consistently supported the country’s development agenda through financial cooperation, trade, and investment initiatives.
