Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, has confirmed that two Ghanaian nationals detained as prisoners of war in Ukraine are alive and in good condition following a rare visit to a high-security detention facility.

The Minister disclosed that the visit was granted after a formal request to Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha.

According to the Minister, the access provided was unprecedented, reportedly marking the first time an African Foreign Minister had been granted such an opportunity to visit prisoners of war in the country.

He confirmed that the two Ghanaians, whose identities remain undisclosed for security reasons, are alive and well.

He further noted that their rights under international law have been respected by Ukrainian authorities.

The Minister expressed appreciation to the Ukrainian government for honouring what he described as an unusual request, citing it as a reflection of the cordial bilateral relations between Ghana and Ukraine.

He added that the gesture has strengthened confidence in ongoing diplomatic negotiations aimed at securing the release of the two nationals.

During the visit, the detained Ghanaians reportedly expressed regret over the circumstances that led to their situation and indicated a determination to become advocates against human trafficking networks upon their return.

They pledged to dedicate their lives to educating vulnerable Africans about the dangers and deceptive practices associated with such operations.
