Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that eminent judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to serve as the Champion and Chief Advocate for the court.

The request followed President Mahama’s historic address to the court in Arusha, Tanzania, marking the first time a Ghanaian leader has addressed the institution during its anniversary commemorations.

In a Facebook post, Ablakwa said the judges were impressed by the president’s strong advocacy for international law, justice and human rights, prompting their call for him to take on a leading promotional role to support the court’s mandate across the continent.

During his address, President Mahama stressed that international law and human rights protections must serve all people, not a select few. He urged African leaders to ratify the court’s protocols, arguing that governments committed to accountability and the rule of law should have no hesitation in submitting to its jurisdiction.

Ahead of the ceremony, the Ghanaian leader also held bilateral talks with host President Samia Suluhu Hassan, discussions Ablakwa described as productive and focused on strengthening ties between the two countries.

The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that Ghana considers the invitation extended to President Mahama a significant honour and a recognition of the country’s longstanding commitment to democracy, justice and human rights promotion on the continent.

He added that Ghana remains grateful to both the court and the government of Tanzania for the warm reception and continued partnership.
