Gov't disburses GHS 5 billion to road contractors — Deputy Roads Minister

The Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suyihini, has announced that the government is disbursing GHS5 billion to road contractors across the country after a rigorous validation of claims.
The payment, he said, forms part of efforts to clear the over GHS 40 billion arrears owed in the road sector — a significant step aimed at reviving stalled infrastructure projects nationwide.
In a statement on Facebook, Mr. Suyihini described the move as the largest single payment to road contractors at one time by any government in Ghana’s history.
He emphasised that the disbursement was achieved without external borrowing, relying solely on prudent management of domestically generated tax revenues.
“This payment demonstrates the government’s commitment to transparency, fiscal discipline, and infrastructure renewal,” he stated.
“It is not funded through loans or commercial bonds, but through effective internal revenue generation and proper application of resources.”
According to the Deputy Minister, the payment will enable most contractors to return to abandoned road projects and also pave the way for the initiation of new ones across the country.
He added that the validation process ensured that only legitimate claims were honoured, to promote accountability and value for money in the road sector.
Mr. Suyihini praised President John Dramani Mahama’s administration for taking bold and result-oriented steps to address long-standing financial constraints in the construction sector, noting that “the focus is on action, not rhetoric.”
The disbursement is expected to accelerate ongoing works, improve road networks, and boost economic activity in affected communities.
