Government begins process to replace Sophia Akuffo on Council of State
The government has confirmed that steps are underway to replace former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo on the Council of State following her resignation from the constitutional advisory body.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, June 15, Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the necessary constitutional and administrative procedures are being followed to fill the vacancy.
According to him, Madam Akuffo submitted her resignation letter in September 2025 but did not provide reasons for her decision.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained that after receiving the resignation letter, the President delayed accepting it at the request of the Council of State, which sought time to engage the former Chief Justice to determine whether any concerns could be addressed.
“The Council of State requested time from the President to further engage her to see if she had any grievances that needed to be addressed, but the Council returned that it has engaged her, and the President can go ahead to accept her resignation,” he said.
He added that the President has since accepted the resignation and that the process to appoint a replacement is ongoing.
“The law is clear on what must be done in such situations, and processes are underway for her replacement,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu stated.
The comments come a day after reports of Madam Akuffo’s resignation emerged in the media.
