Gun amnesty extension must focus on awareness - Kumadoe
Security analyst and Fraud Consultant Richard Kumadoe has called for stronger public sensitisation and deeper community engagement following the government’s move to prolong the Gun Amnesty Programme (GAP) to January 30, 2026.
He noted that the extended timeline should be deliberately used to target communities where the recovery of firearms has not been fully achieved. According to him, the exercise should go beyond collecting weapons and focus heavily on educating the public about the proper channels and procedures for voluntarily handing in firearms.
Mr. Kumadoe made these remarks during an interview where he explained that the extension offers security agencies the opportunity to intensify on-the-ground activities, especially in areas with limited awareness of the programme.
He emphasized that widespread education and consistent messaging are essential, stating that people must clearly understand the accepted process for surrendering weapons. He added that building trust and ensuring transparency would encourage more individuals to comply willingly.
Earlier, the Ministry of the Interior announced the extension of the Gun Amnesty Programme as part of broader efforts to address the spread of illegal and unregistered firearms. The initiative was introduced on November 18, 2025, commenced on December 1, 2025, and was originally scheduled to conclude on January 15, 2026.
According to the Ministry, the decision to extend the programme followed strong public participation and cooperation nationwide, making it necessary to provide additional time for individuals to surrender firearms without the risk of legal consequences.
Mr. Kumadoe further stressed that the effectiveness of the extended amnesty would largely hinge on a balanced approach that combines enforcement with sustained public education, ensuring citizens clearly understand the objectives, procedures, and advantages of the programme.
