The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has clarified recent comments attributed to him regarding police recruitment for the youth of Bawku, following widespread media reports suggesting preferential treatment for the area.

During his recent visit to the conflict-stricken town of Bawku in the Upper East Region, the IGP assured residents of inclusive opportunities in the upcoming recruitment exercises. However, several online media outlets reported that the IGP had promised “priority” recruitment for the youth of Bawku—a claim he says misrepresents his original message.

Addressing the issue, the IGP explained that the assurance given was part of a broader peacebuilding strategy aimed at encouraging the youth to lay down their weapons and reintegrate peacefully into society.

“We never said recruitment would be exclusive to the youth of Bawku,” he clarified. “What we said was that they will be allowed to go through the normal recruitment process just like every other qualified Ghanaian youth.”

He emphasized that recruitment into the security services would be decentralized, allowing eligible youth from across the country—including remote areas like Bawku—to participate without having to travel to Accra or other major cities.

“This approach is meant to ensure equal access and fairness in the recruitment process,” he added. “It is not a special recruitment exercise for any specific group, but rather a national effort to be more inclusive.”

The IGP also reiterated the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to restoring peace in Bawku and strengthening community trust. He encouraged residents to point out any issues or mistakes by the police so they can be corrected promptly.

“We are here to work with you. If there are any grievances, we are ready to address them. Let’s move forward together in peace,” he said.
