Joint task force swiftly responds to whistle-blower alert on suspected illegal mining along Offin River

A joint task force has swiftly responded to a midnight whistle-blower report concerning suspected illegal mining activities along the Offin River, demonstrating the government’s continued vigilance in the fight against environmental degradation.
According to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, the operation was launched in the early hours of Monday morning after the team received an anonymous tip-off about ongoing illicit activities threatening the river and surrounding forests.
Despite limited information from the informant, the task force reportedly proceeded with “diligence and professionalism” to verify the claims and assess the situation on the ground.
“Our commitment remains firm to respond promptly to any threat or attack on our forests and water bodies,” the Minister said. “Protecting our environment is not a choice but a responsibility we owe to future generations.”
He emphasised that the swift response forms part of broader national efforts to safeguard natural resources and curb the resurgence of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
He also encouraged citizens to play an active role in environmental protection by reporting any suspicious activities to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) via 0240700487.
“Timely information saves our rivers, forests, and communities,” the Minister added.
“Together, we stand strong in this fight for our land, our rivers, and our heritage.”
The Offin River, one of Ghana’s key water bodies, has been among the hardest hit by illegal mining, prompting increased security operations in the Ashanti and Central Regions over the past year.
