Majority dismisses alleged World Cup travel slot allocation to MPs
The Majority Caucus in Parliament has rejected allegations that its Members were granted special travel opportunities to attend the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the claims as inaccurate and likely to fuel unnecessary controversy within the House.
The issue arose after the Minority Chief Whip and member of parliament for Weija Gbawe Jerry Ahmed alleged that each Majority Member of Parliament had been allocated two travel slots for the tournament, in addition to three slots reportedly assigned to their constituencies.
According to the Minority, the arrangement amounted to preferential treatment and raised concerns about fairness in the distribution of opportunities associated with the global sporting event.
Responding to the claims, the Majority Caucus dismissed the assertions, maintaining that no such allocations had been made either to Members of Parliament or to their constituencies.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor stated that the allegations were unfounded. He stressed that the government has neither sponsored nor designated travel slots for individual MPs to attend the World Cup.
