NE/R: Ghana Immigration Service condemns fatal attack on officers at Gbintri checkpoint
The Ghana Immigration Service has strongly condemned the violent attack on two of its officers while on duty at the Gbintri Inland Checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality, North East Region.
The incident occurred around 1 AM on Friday, October 3, 2025, tragically resulting in the loss of Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO II) Rafiq Mohammad.
AICO II Oppong Daniel, on the other hand, suffered severe gunshot wounds and "remains in critical condition at Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu," a GIS statement revealed.
"A joint team from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service in the North East Region, swiftly responded to the incident, ensuring the safety of the injured officer and launching a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of this heinous crime," GIS said.
"The Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI) extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the fallen officer, honouring his ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty," the statement continued.
"The CGI pledges unwavering commitmnent to ensuring that those responsible are swifly identified and apprehended," the statement emphasised.
The statement signed by Maud Anima Quainoo, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration, Public Affairs Department, concluded, "The Ghana Immigration Service remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard Ghana's territorial integrity, emphasising that this critical responsibility depends on continued collaboration with the citizens whose security we are entrusted to protect."
