The Government of Ghana has intensified efforts to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under unusual circumstances while studying in the Republic of Latvia.

In an update issued in Accra on February 19, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a high-level delegation led by the Foreign Affairs Minister travelled to Latvia to engage Latvian authorities on the matter.

The Ministry disclosed that the family of the deceased, including his mother and aunt, were duly represented during meetings with officials in Latvia.

The Ghanaian delegation comprised forensic experts, a pathologist, legal representatives, Ghana’s Ambassador, and consular officers from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin.

During the visit, discussions were held with several top Latvian officials, including the Foreign Minister, Minister for the Interior, Police Chiefs, State Prosecutors, and investigators handling the case.

According to the statement, Latvian authorities indicated that investigations into the student’s death remain active and ongoing.

They further noted that, due to the high level of interest expressed by the Government of Ghana, the probe is now under the direct supervision of the Latvian Interior Ministry, with new investigators assigned to ensure a credible outcome.

The Latvian side also welcomed the submission of any additional information that could aid the investigation.

As part of this process, the deceased’s mother, guided by the Ghanaian delegation, submitted a formal statement to the relevant authorities for inclusion in the official investigative record.

The Government of Ghana has also requested that the final investigative report be made available to the family of Nana Agyei Ahyia, a request to which Latvian authorities reportedly raised no objection.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to truth, transparency, and justice, pledging to maintain regular engagement with Latvian authorities and to pursue all appropriate diplomatic and legal channels to ensure due process.

Officials added that they remain in close contact with the bereaved family and will continue to provide updates to both the family and the general public as developments unfold.
