Over 500 police personnel deployed for general cleaning exercise in Greater Accra
More than 500 police personnel have been deployed across the Greater Accra Region to support the national general cleaning exercise.
The widespread deployment forms part of a coordinated national sanitation and cleanup initiative aimed at clearing choked drains, removing accumulated waste, and improving environmental hygiene in the capital following recent severe seasonal flooding.
Security and Active Cleanup Support
The police personnel are working alongside sanitation teams, including workers from Zoomlion Ghana Limited, personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and community volunteers.
In addition to actively participating in the physical cleanup work, the deployed officers are providing security and managing traffic to ensure the exercise proceeds smoothly without disrupting major transport routes.
Key areas targeted in the initial phases of the drive include highly populated commercial zones, market centers, and flood-prone communities where blocked drainage networks pose persistent risks to public health and safety.
Political and Corporate Backing
The exercise has gained broad momentum, with corporate bodies and political organizations rallying behind the initiative.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a directive urging all its members across the country to actively participate in the national cleanup.
Organisers and environmental experts note that the massive deployment of personnel is intended to foster a long-term culture of civic responsibility towards sanitation while mitigating environmental hazards and reducing the health risks associated with choked drainage systems in urban areas.
