PUWU assures President Mahama's gov't of collabo for 'permanent solutions to energy, housing and water situation and at affordable cost to Ghanaians'
The Public Utility Workers' Union (PUWU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has informed President John Dramani Mahama of their readiness to “collaborate with government in finding permanent solutions to energy, housing and water situation and at affordable cost to Ghanaians”.
“PUWU of TUC Ghana wishes H. E. President John Dramani Mahama the best in your tenure and promise to work closely with your administration through your ministries, in assisting to find solution to the challenges of ECG in a sustainable manner,” a January 13, 2025, statement, signed by Timothy Nyame, General Secretary, PUWU, emphasised.
The PUWU, also, noted it had not changed its mind concerning the privatisation of the national power distributor, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Again, the union observed ECG was “heavily controlled and managed by politicians,” decrying “the cost of input in running the power sector, which will invariably be factored in electricity pricing”.

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO H. E. PRESIDENT J0HN DRAMANI MAHAMA
The Public Utility Workers' Union of TUC Ghana (PUWU of TUC Ghana) congratulates H. E. John Dramani Mahama for your election to the highest office of the President of the Republic of Ghana after a resounding victory on December 7th, 2024.
As the Union with membership mainly in the Utilities and Housing sectors of the country, we are ready to collaborate with government in finding permanent solutions to energy, housing and water situation and at affordable cost to Ghanaians.
It is, however, refreshing and heartwarming to note the enthusiasm of commentators and other interest groups attempting to offer solutions in addressing the energy sector challenges, for that matter the utility concerns of Ghanaians.
We have observed with keen interest comments, recommendations and suggestions that need to be taken to sustain the energy sector using information available to them without providing any proof of success or stakeholder engagement they have undertaken to arrive at the conclusion.
PUWU of TUC Ghana is not unaware of many interest groups, locally and abroad, when it comes to investment in the power and energy sector.
We are also aware of many who paraded the corridors of power with interests in ECG in the past and have metamorphosed and resurfaced to continue their game.
We can vividly recall the engagement we had with the previous NDC administration regarding the issues of the Power Distributor, ECG.
PUWU of TUC Ghana wishes to reaffirm that its position on EĆG privatization and management remains unchanged and believes the best alternative presented stands as the best for Ghanaians and other stakeholders.
While the Power Distributor is heavily controlled and managed by politicians, we have continuously expressed our disquiet on the cost of input in running the power sector, which will invariably be factored in electricity pricing.
PUWU of TUC Ghana wishes H. E. President John Dramani Mahama the best in your tenure and promise to work closely with your administration through your ministries, in assisting to find solution to the challenges of ECG in a sustainable manner.
Once again, receive our congratulations.
