Police releases NDC's Awutu Senya East parliamentary candidate from detention

Ms Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, has been released after several hours of detention at the Police CID Headquarters, Accra.
Naa Koryoo was held at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, 2024, following an invitation, which sparked anger and protests among NDC supporters.
They gathered outside the station, demanding her release.
Former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama condemned the detention, warning that it could escalate political tensions.
In a statement calling for Naa Koryoo's release, he urged stakeholders to recognise that "justice is not just a moral imperative but a crucial prerequisite for maintaining peace and stability in a nation".
Mr Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, criticised the Ghana Police Service’s leadership, claiming the arrest was orchestrated by personnel influenced by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Naa Koryoo’s assistant, Delali Sewarkpor, echoed this sentiment, describing the detention as political persecution by elements within the NPP.
Jubilant NDC supporters were seen celebrating outside the Cantonments Police Station around 12:10 PM on Saturday, June 8, following Naa Koryoo’s release.
