President John Mahama lights the perpetual flame at the 59th Independence Day celebration
President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the rotational celebration of Ghana's Independence Day.
The presidency explained it was to cut down cost.
Addressing the media, the Minister of State for Government Communications and Spokesperson for the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the regional rotational celebration had been paused, as the 2023 event cost the country GH¢15 million.
He emphasised the government was committed to prudent spending while delivering on its core mandate.
He revealed this year's celebration of independence would take place at the seat of government, the Golden Jubilee House.
Although the event used to be celebrated mainly in the national capital, Accra, at the Independence (Black Star) Square, in the last few years, the celebration has been rotated amongst various regional capitals.
