Residents of Amenam petition against mining in sacred KwaaKru forest

Residents of Amenam and seven neighbouring communities in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region have petitioned against the mining activities of Sikadwaso Global Company Limited in the KwaaKru Forest Reserve.
The communities have raised strong objections over the environmental, cultural, and spiritual implications of mining in the 600-hectare reserve, which they regard as sacred.
Speaking on behalf of the communities, Nana Kwame Akomea, the Akwansrahene of Akyem Kotoku, stated that the forest is believed to be the dwelling place of their gods, making any form of mining within its bounds taboo.
He warned that continued disregard for their cultural values could compel the communities to take matters into their own hands.
In a show of resistance, the residents organised a peaceful demonstration and presented a formal petition to the Birim North Municipal Chief Executive and the Minerals Commission.
They are demanding an immediate halt to all mining operations by Sikadwaso Global Company Limited in the KwaaKru Forest.
Residents fear the mining activities will lead to the destruction of the forest, jeopardising their livelihoods, properties, and the ecological balance of the area.
They are urging the government and regulatory authorities to intervene promptly to protect the environment and uphold responsible mining practices.
