Educ. Min. Iddrisu directs UG to reduce trad. hall fees by 25%

The University of Ghana (UG) has been directed by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to reduce residential facility user fees (RFUF) by GHS500 for traditional halls.
Currently, the fee is GHS3,000, and so per the stated directive, the new fee will be GHS2,500.
According to ministry, the directive takes effect across board for both fresh and continuing students of Ghana’s first-ever university.
“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent and I have subsequently asked her to engage you (SRC) in the future on any fee announcement,” Mr Iddrisu informed the Students Representative Council (SRC) led by Maradona ‘Guru’ Adjei Yeboah.
This was during a meeting with the UG management on Thursday, February 6, 2025, where Vice Chancellor Prof Nana Aba Amfoh assured the minister of compliance.
She said: “We have listened to you our minister and also our students, and we can afford to reduce it to 25 percent across the board and going forward there will be adequate student engagement.”
On his part, Guru expressed gratitude and called for a refund of the fees to students.
“We are thankful for the reduction at least it will reduce some sort of burden from our parents, there should be a refund for those who have already paid,” he said.
The GHS3,000 RFUF was announced in January 2025. According to the UG management, 80 percent of their students have paid residential facility user fees, so far.
