The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has unveiled significant reforms to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, including the elimination of the double-track system and an expansion to include private schools.

Mr. Iddrisu explained that the policy expansion is aimed at increasing access to secondary education.

“We have decided to extend Free SHS to private schools in Ghana,” he stated.

“This means that through the computerized placement system, 150,000 students will be assigned to private senior high schools in addition to those in public institutions.”

The government intends to phase out the double-track system over the next two to three years, supported by major infrastructure investments to accommodate growing student numbers.

“Our goal is to end the double-track system, and this will require substantial infrastructure investment,” Mr. Iddrisu emphasized.

In a further expansion of educational support, he disclosed plans to extend Free SHS benefits to tertiary students, ensuring continued financial assistance for higher education.

“We want to guarantee that every student in tertiary education benefits from the same support offered at the secondary level,” he added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to accessible education.

Meanwhile, Mr. Iddrisu has ordered an audit into the controversial Senior High School (SHS) Wi-Fi contract, with findings expected to be made public within two to three weeks.

“I have requested that the audit report be disclosed publicly within the next two to three weeks,” he stated.

The Minister underscored the government’s priority in enhancing internet access for students and indicated a willingness to engage local companies such as Starlink for broadband infrastructure development.

“What matters most is ensuring that students have reliable internet connectivity.

If a Ghanaian partner, such as Starlink, can help achieve this, we are open to collaboration,” he noted.

Additionally, he confirmed that the previous SHS Wi-Fi contract would not be renewed, pending a full IT audit and subsequent public advertisement of the contract process.

He gave these hints while speaking interview on Accra-based Joy FM.
