Ghana's education system needs urgent comprehensive review - NAGRAT president
President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Angel Carbonu has called for an urgent and comprehensive review of Ghana’s education system, warning that the sector was on the verge of collapse.
According to Mr Carbonu, the performance of candidates in this year’s WASSCE clearly signalled deep-rooted challenges that demanded immediate attention.
“The system we are running — is it beneficial to our children? Is it aiding proper teaching and learning? Are we producing students who understand what they are learning to become worthwhile citizens in this country? We need to review our education system,” he asserted.
Mr Carbonu further urged politicians to refrain from interfering in the day-to-day management of education and allow professionals to take full charge.
“Please, politicians should take their hands off education and allow the professionals to run it,” he appealed.
Responding to these concerns, the Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, assured the public that government was taking concrete steps to address the challenges.
“We are reverting the curriculum system to the WAEC system. These are some of the measures we are implementing to ensure our students become credible and competitive globally,” he said.
Mr Mohammed also revealed that the ministry of education would soon introduce a new strategy aimed at tackling the rising failure rates.
“We have announced that in the 2026 budget, we intend to end the double-track system by 2027. We have already initiated measures toward this — about one hundred double-track schools have reverted to single track — and we are also improving teacher training,” he noted.
