Stakeholders urge greater investment in STEM to prepare Ghana for the digital future

Stakeholders in Ghana’s education sector are calling on the government to prioritize Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education as a strategic tool for improving teaching and enhancing the country’s global competitiveness in the digital era.
Speaking at a digital skills training programme in Tema, Dr. Stella Agyenim-Boateng, Vice Chairperson of the Public Services Commission, stressed the critical importance of investing in STEM and digitalisation to secure Ghana’s future.
“Our children must be equipped with the right digital skills to thrive in the evolving global landscape,” Dr. Agyenim-Boateng said.
“Increased investment in STEM is not just a necessity—it’s an urgent national priority.”
The programme, spearheaded by the Telecel Digitech Academy in partnership with the Ghana Education Service and the National STEM Centre, provided practical training to students from three schools in the Tema Metropolis.
Over a 12-week period, learners were exposed to coding, robotics, web design, and other essential digital skills.
Dr. Agyenim-Boateng, who observed a demonstration by the students, praised their creativity and innovation, describing their work as a clear example of the transformative power of STEM education.
She called for sustained support and collaboration to expand such initiatives to benefit more Ghanaian students.
Madam Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Sustainability and External Communications at the Telecel Ghana Foundation, emphasized that the programme is designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application in STEM education.
“The Digitech Academy is our commitment to nurturing the next generation of problem-solvers and innovators,” she noted.
Tema Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs. Bernice Ofori, also echoed the importance of STEM in building a future-ready generation.
She highlighted the role of STEM education in fostering critical thinking, creativity, and leadership among young learners.
