Teachers protest over delayed pension payments, demand immediate action

Hundreds of members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) marched through Accra on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, to protest government's failure to pay their 13-month arrears under the Tier 2 pension scheme.
The protest began at the Obra Spot in Nkrumah Circle and ended at Independence Square, with teachers holding placards and chanting slogans to draw attention to their grievances.
The demonstrators called on the government to prioritise their pension payments, which they say have been delayed for far too long.
Speaking to the media during the protest, Peter Boateng, Greater Accra Regional Secretary of GNAT, expressed the growing frustration among teachers over the government's inaction.
He called for urgent intervention from the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the government to resolve the issue.
“Our members have shown patience, but this delay in releasing our pension arrears is unacceptable. We are out here to remind the government of its responsibility,” Mr. Boateng stressed, urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent further escalation.
