Achrensua youth demand justice for 3 slain colleagues
The United Achrensua Youth has strongly condemned the alleged killing of three young men by police officers, calling for justice and clarity.
Addressing the press on Friday, the youth group rejected claims by the Ghana Police Service that the victims were involved in theft at Newmont Mining Company.
“Our brothers did not go there to steal gold.
It’s absurd for the police to claim that Newmont leaves gold in the bush for people to cart away,” the group stated.
They further accused the police of fabricating narratives to cover up what they termed intentional murder clothed as standard procedure.
According to the youth, the victims, who were from Achrensua, were already striving to fend for themselves when the tragedy occurred.
They also criticized the police for failing to consult local leaders or investigate thoroughly, adding, “If the Ghana Police Service wants to be taken seriously, they must act according to their motto; ‘Service With Integrity.’”
The youth also refuted claims of political affiliations surrounding the incident.
“It is not NDC or any other political party that sent these individuals to mine.
They were trying to provide for their families,” they clarified.
They emphasized the lack of job opportunities for the youth in the Ahafo Region and suggested that mining companies cede unused pits to locals for community-driven mining projects as that would create jobs for the youth and foster better relations between the mining companies and the local communities,” they proposed.
The people of Achrensua demanded a public apology from the police for the alleged falsehoods and called for more community engagements to douse tensions and set the records right.
Haruna Yakubu and Bawah Yussif, speaking on behalf of the youth, urged the government and authorities to act swiftly to ensure justice and restore trust in the community.
