The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reintroduced its “Red Line Policy” aimed at regulating trading activities on designated pavements across the city.

The move forms part of broader efforts to restore order, ensure pedestrian safety, and improve environmental sanitation within the capital.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, led a team to redraw red boundary lines along selected pavements, signalling the official relaunch of the initiative.

During an engagement with traders and members of the media, Mr Allotey explained that the policy was rooted in principles of equity and fairness, as well as his commitment to responsible and inclusive leadership.

“The red line policy is not to punish traders, but to create a more organised and safer city for everyone,” he stated.

“It is also part of our contribution to the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.”

He further disclosed that the renewed exercise, which began on Tuesday, would be sustained through a series of strategic interventions.

These include the introduction of a rotational trading system that allows vendors to operate for extended hours on designated days, and the recruitment of local youth to bolster the AMA's enforcement task force.

The Mayor urged traders to cooperate with city authorities and adhere to the red line boundaries to ensure smooth pedestrian movement and a cleaner urban environment.
