E/R: Police shuts down Kukurantumi station after violent attack by youth

The Ghana Police Service has shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all personnel after the facility was attacked by irate youth on Sunday morning.
According to the Eastern Regional Police Command, the violence erupted on September 21, 2025, around 7:00 a.m., following the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, also known as D-ball.
Kena, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and stealing, reportedly died while receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital.
The police said some youth of the town besieged the station and nearby barracks, pelting them with stones and clubs, and attempting to set the building on fire.
A reinforcement team was later deployed to restore calm.
The Inspector-General of Police subsequently ordered the closure of the station and the withdrawal of all officers for safety reasons.
In a statement signed by Supt. George Peprah Mills, Head of Public Affairs in the region, the police disclosed that both the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) have begun investigations into the suspect’s death.
“The Eastern Regional Police Command has engaged the deceased’s family and other community leaders and assured them of a thorough investigation into the matter,” the statement read.
Authorities also confirmed that video footage of the attack is being reviewed to identify and arrest those responsible.
The police urged the public to seek lawful means of addressing grievances rather than resorting to violence.
