Electric buses to transform travel for physically challenged – Adu Boahen
The introduction of Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses is set to revolutionise public transport, particularly for Persons with disabilities and mobility challenges.
Speaking at the launch event in Accra, on Wednesday, 27 November 2024, the Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), Albert Adu Boahen, highlighted the inclusive design of the new buses as a significant step towards ensuring equitable access for all commuters.
“These buses are a testament to our commitment to inclusivity. They are not just greener; they are designed to ensure hassle-free travel for all,” Mr. Adu Boahen emphasised.
Equipped with wheelchair ramps, low floors, and priority seating, the buses are tailored to meet the needs of physically challenged individuals, providing them with a dignified and comfortable commuting experience.
“This initiative underscores our dedication to creating a public transport system that serves everyone, irrespective of their physical abilities. It is a defining moment in Ghana’s transport history,” he added.
The fleet, launched under the National Electric Vehicle Policy of 2023, aims to modernise Ghana’s public transport system while reducing carbon emissions and operational costs. The initial deployment of 10 electric buses is part of a broader plan to introduce 100 buses nationwide.
In addition to their accessibility features, the buses also offer a smoother, quieter ride, further enhancing the experience for all passengers.
Mr. Adu Boahen therefore urged Ghanaians to support the initiative, stating: “This is not just about unveiling a new fleet; it is about embracing a future where public transport is cleaner, greener, and more inclusive. Let us work together to make this vision a reality.”
