GhISEP calls for thorough investigation and stronger safety protocols after El-Wak Stadium stampede
The Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GhISEP) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede that occurred during a military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, resulting in the deaths of six applicants and leaving five others in critical condition.
The incident happened on November 12, 2025, when thousands of young people converged on the stadium to participate in the Ghana Armed Forces body selection exercise.
Overcrowding and chaotic movement led to a deadly stampede, prompting national grief and widespread calls for accountability.
In a press release signed by its National President, Engr. Dr. Mrs. Miriam Eduful, GhISEP extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The Institute described the tragedy as a stark reminder of the need for strong safety protocols and proper emergency preparedness for large-scale public events, particularly recruitment exercises that attract massive crowds.
GhISEP commended the Ministry of Defence for suspending the recruitment process to prevent further incidents, noting that such a step was necessary to allow for a comprehensive review of safety arrangements.
The Institute called for a full-scale investigation to uncover the root causes of the stampede and to ensure that corrective measures are implemented to avert future occurrences.
“Our team of experts are ready to support the committee tasked with investigating this incident,” the statement said, adding that GhISEP stands prepared to collaborate with the Ministry of Defence and relevant stakeholders to design and implement effective safety protocols and emergency response plans for future recruitment activities.
GhISEP also urged all 15 recruitment centres across the country, where the exercise is ongoing, to immediately review and enforce safety standards to protect applicants.
The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a national culture of safety and environmental best practices, stressing that the well-being of citizens must always remain a top priority.
