J.B. Danquah Murder: Court orders retrial of Daniel Asiedu after hung jury
The murder trial of Daniel Asiedu, accused of the killing of former Abuakwa North MP, JB Danquah, is set for a retrial after a hung jury delivered an inconclusive verdict.
A seven-member jury returned a split decision of 4:3 for not guilty, prompting the presiding judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, to discharge the jury. Citing Section 285(4) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30), Justice Marfo ruled that the verdict was insufficient for any conclusive action.
Despite the jury’s decision, Asiedu remains in custody by order of the court.
The case, which dates back to 2016, alleges that Daniel Asiedu robbed and fatally stabbed JB Danquah at his residence. Asiedu was arrested shortly after the incident and subsequently underwent psychiatric evaluation, which deemed him fit to stand trial. His plea was taken in February 2021, and the trial began the same year.
The retrial is expected to address unresolved issues and seek a definitive resolution to this high-profile case, which has drawn widespread attention.
Justice Marfo’s decision ensures the judicial process will continue in pursuit of justice for the late MP’s family and the public, who remain keenly invested in the outcome of the case.
