Let’s give OSP the oxygen to be able to work – Domelevo
Former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo has called for an end to government interference with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to fully support the office in its fight against corruption.
At the 2024 Domelevo Accountability Lectures, Mr. Domelevo addressed the recent petition for the removal of the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.
Despite his previous reservations about the OSP, Mr. Domelevo emphasised the necessity of backing the office’s mandate to combat corruption effectively.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr. Domelevo shared insights from his collaboration with Martin Amidu, the OSP's first holder.
He underscored the importance of empowering the office, stating: “He seems to be the only person serious about fighting corruption. Institutional and legal frameworks are not enough to effectively combat corruption, and that is the state in which we have found ourselves here in Ghana. After establishing the institutions, we must give them the oxygen to breathe.”
Mr. Domelevo expressed concern over the significant obstacles facing Agyebeng, which he believes impede his efforts.
He called on the government to ensure that Agyebeng can perform his duties without obstruction, urging, “So please, government officials and people in government, leave the Special Prosecutor alone. Let’s give him the oxygen for him to be able to do his work.”
Mr. Domelevo admitted that while he was initially skeptical about the OSP Bill, he chose to support it, believing it could aid in the fight against corruption.
He pointed out that Agyebeng’s current struggles reflect broader challenges and reiterated his call for strong governmental support to strengthen the office’s role.
